Waiting for the day I get off this rock

Blog of Arcana - television, film, music and the things I love, with snippets of my life

My girl wrote to me a few months ago. She wrote on pink notepaper with two doves in one corner. She really wanted to know a few things about her biological parents you know like were we into sport or books like her. What the fuck could I say? Cause if I was her.. I was her and I found out that my father was one of four rapists and my mother their fifteen year old victim, I would want to kill myself. I would want to blow my fucking brains out. And that she doesn’t know never has to know.. that’s it. That’s all I have to give her. Every birthday, every Christmas, a fucking right to innocence.

Campion delves deeper, however, to consider how behavior, particularly in women, is informed by family dynamics, community values, and personal events. GJ is a brutally logical thinker, but she’s in consistent praise of the body’s intelligence, its ability to lead her into clarity even as her brain holds her back. Top of the Lake echoes GJ’s unwavering belief in the body to profound effect, as despite the formidable technical mastery applied and the demanding sprawl of the multifaceted narrative, Campion’s series has the unmistakable timbre of daring art made naturally.
